Iridium Offers Globalstar Customers Another Option
|
Iridium Satellite is introducing a rebate program for North American customers switching from Globalstar to Iridium, the company announced Jan. 29.
The “Trade-Up To Iridium” program targets government users, first responders, educational institutions and relief organizations that have purchased satellite phone service that may now be unreliable, Iridium said.
“The goal of this program is to provide a painless and cost-effective way for users affected by the recently disclosed deterioration in Globalstar's satellite network to take advantage of Iridium's reliable network quality and global service,” Greg Ewert, executive vice president, Iridium Satellite, said in a statement. “Satellite phone service is an important utility and, in many cases, a mission-critical lifeline for organizations operating in places where terrestrial and cellular networks are unavailable, overwhelmed or inadequate. Many subscribers are first responders and public safety organizations that cannot afford to take chances when lives are at stake. The Trade-Up to Iridium program ensures that participating public servants have uninterrupted access to dependable mobile satellite service to support their vital operations in any place at any time.”

Cessation of Inmarsat A Services 31st December 2007
|
Inmarsat A, the original analogue service first introduced during 1982, will reach its end of life on the 31st December 2007.
Inmarsat satellite communication services are now provided more efficiently & effectively by other types of digital Inmarsat terminals and no new Inmarsat A Mobile Earth Stations (MES) have been type approved since 1991. Inmarsat therefore, in accordance with previous correspondence, notifications and agreement with the IMO, intends to shut down the service on 31st December 2007 at 23:59 UTC. This will have the effect of ending all services provided by Inmarsat A, including all GMDSS distress functionality from the terminal.

Iridium announces the introduction of a "Test-Your-Satellite-Phone" number
|
In preparation for the 2007 hurricane season, Iridium announces the introduction of a "Test-Your-Satellite-Phone" number that all Iridium subscribers can call free-of-charge.
By dialing +1(480)752-5105 from their satellite phone, Iridium subscribers can verify that their phone is working properly and familiarize themselves with the phone's operation - all free of charge. Callers will hear a recorded message confirming that their call was completed and offering quick tips on proper handset usage. This automated service allows subscribers to test their phones whenever and wherever they like. It is our hope that the service will be especially useful as a testing and training aid for first responders and travelers who may only use their phones infrequently.
Thank you for sharing this number with your staff and customers. We believe it will provide a valuable service.

HNS 9201 firmware 3.6.1.5 released today
|
Dear customers,
We can now confirm that the HNS 9201 firmware update 3.6.1.5 has been released today.
Please download an updated release document here.
Following the discovery of a streaming issue with the previous firmware update, both HNS and Inmarsat have spent over 5 days thoroughly testing this latest release. We hope this provides you with a level of comfort and confidence that this release is stable and will provide a seamless transition through the RAN 3 upgrade. We recognise the challenge that has been encountered through the recall of the previous upgrade, and offer our sincere apologies about the situation.
As you know, upgrade v3.6.1.5 is mandatory in order to provide HNS 9201 BGAN terminal users with continued service beyond the introduction of the forthcoming Inmarsat network upgrade.
The network upgrade is necessary for the launch of our FleetBroadband, SwiftBroadband and land vehicular BGAN services planned for the second half of 2007.
The HNS firmware must be used to update the terminals in order for them to operate over the two Inmarsat-4 satellites once the network upgrade is complete.
The network will now be upgraded on 12 July, 2007
This means your customer has 7 weeks to upgrade their HNS terminal(s) and we remind you that if an HNS user has not updated their terminal by this date, they will be unable to gain BGAN service.>
The firmware update, as well as the application notes in PDF format, which include guidance on installation, can be downloaded from http://broadband.inmarsat.com/support.
If you have any queries regarding the HNS firmware or BGAN network upgrade, please contact Inmarsat Customer Services either via email to support@bganbss.inmarsat.com or by telephone on +44 (0)20 7728 1300.
Thanks once again for your help and cooperation.
